AC Maintenance & Tune-Ups in Round Rock & Austin

An AC tune-up from Koala Cooling & Plumbing is a 49-point Cool Check for $149, with no separate service fee. Your technician tests the capacitors, amp draws and refrigerant charge (superheat and subcool), blows out the condensate drain line, checks the drain safety switch, and walks you through the results before recommending anything. Koala Club members get one every spring.

Central Texas air conditioners run hard from April through October, and most of the breakdowns we see in July started as something a spring tune-up would have caught: a capacitor drifting out of tolerance, a drain line starting to clog, or a refrigerant charge that's slightly off. A Cool Check finds those problems while they're still small and gives you a written record of your system's condition.

What's Included in a Koala Cool Check

Every Cool Check follows the same 49-point checklist. Your technician writes the actual readings next to the manufacturer's rated values, so you can see how your system compares to spec.

AreaWhat we check
Outdoor unit (condenser)Refrigerant type and pressures, superheat and subcool, compressor running and inrush amps against rated values, condenser fan amps, compressor and fan capacitors, contactor voltage drop and resistance, low-voltage reading and wiring, start-assist device, coil fins and coil cleanliness, unit level, disconnect and lugs, line set insulation, locking Schrader caps, and clearance from shrubs. Wire connections tightened.
Indoor unit (air handler or furnace)Evaporator coil, blower wheel, blower bearings, blower motor amps and fan capacitor, circuit board and wiring, primary and secondary condensate drains (drain line blown out), drain safety switch, pan treatment strip, and cabinet screws.
System performanceTemperature change across the coil (Delta T), wet bulb temperature, and indoor and outdoor temperatures at arrival.
Thermostat and homeThermostat programming, thermostat batteries (you supply them), hot or cold spots, and the UV light and bulb if you have one.

Every Cool Check includes a condensate drain line blowout, which clears the clog behind our most common summer repair. The blowout is part of the Cool Check only; the fall Heat Check focuses on your furnace or heat pump.

How We Report What We Find: Must, Should, Could

Every item on the checklist is marked pass, caution or fail. When something needs attention, we sort it into three groups so you can decide what to do:

  • Must: items that failed and need repair to keep the system running safely.
  • Should: items that still work but test outside manufacturer tolerance, like a capacitor that's drifting low. Fixing them now usually prevents a breakdown later.
  • Could: optional upgrades, such as a surge protector or a UV light, that add protection or improve air quality.

Every recommendation comes with its published price from our StraightForward Pricing™ book. You approve or decline each one, with no pressure either way.

How Often Should You Service Your AC?

Once a year, in the spring, before the first long run of hot days. In Central Texas a cooling system can run most of the day from June through September, so a spring visit catches problems before the heaviest load of the year. We schedule each check by the weather: a Cool Check needs it warm enough outside to test the AC under real load, and a Heat Check needs it cool enough to run the heat through a full cycle. A heat pump heats and cools with the same outdoor unit, so it should also get a fall Heat Check before the first freeze, and gas furnaces get a Heat Check in the fall too. See what a Heat Check covers on our heating maintenance page.

Why Maintenance Matters in Central Texas

  • Capacitors wear out in the heat. A weak capacitor makes the compressor work harder to start. We test both against their rated microfarads and replace any that fall outside tolerance, even if they still work. Club members get a lifetime warranty on replacement capacitors.
  • Drain lines clog. Clearing a clogged condensate drain is our most common repair ($277, or $249 for Club members). A Cool Check blows out the drain line and tests the safety switch that shuts the system off before water reaches your ceiling.
  • Refrigerant charge drifts. We measure superheat and subcool instead of guessing from pressures alone. A system that's undercharged or overcharged costs more to run and wears out faster.
  • Warranty records. Most manufacturer warranties expect documented annual maintenance. Your completed Cool Check is that record.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does an AC tune-up cost?

$149 for a one-time Cool Check, with no separate service fee. We occasionally run seasonal promotions that lower that price. Koala Club members get a spring Cool Check and a fall Heat Check as part of their $28.79 monthly membership.

What's included in an AC tune-up?

Our Cool Check is a 49-point inspection of the outdoor unit, indoor unit, thermostat and system performance. It includes capacitor and amp-draw tests, refrigerant charge by superheat and subcool, a condensate drain line blowout, the drain safety switch, and the temperature change across the coil.

How often should I have my AC serviced?

Once a year, in the spring, on a day warm enough to test the AC under load. Heat pumps should also get a fall Heat Check, scheduled once it is cool enough to run the heat, since the same outdoor unit heats your home in winter.

Do I have to be a Koala Club member to get a tune-up?

No. Anyone can book a Cool Check for $149. The Club adds a fall Heat Check, an annual plumbing inspection, a water heater flush, a $49 service fee (waived when you have paid work done) and 10% off all repairs and replacements.

What happens if the tune-up finds a problem?

Your technician sorts findings into Must, Should and Could, explains each one, and shows you the published price before any work starts. You decide what to fix, and nothing is done without your approval.

Do you service all AC brands?

Yes. We maintain every major brand of air conditioner and heat pump, no matter who installed it.

Does maintenance keep my warranty valid?

Most manufacturer warranties expect documented annual maintenance. Your completed Cool Check gives you a dated record of the readings and results.
