When to Consider AC Replacement
Even a well-maintained air conditioner won’t last forever. Most systems run reliably for 10 to 15 years, but wear and tear eventually take their toll. Knowing when to replace can save you from costly repairs, uncomfortable downtime, and high energy bills.
Common signs it’s time for a new AC:
- Frequent repairs: If you’re calling for service more than once a season, the costs can add up quickly.
- Inconsistent cooling: Hot spots, uneven temperatures, or weak airflow mean your system is struggling.
- Rising energy bills: An older AC has to work harder and use more energy to keep you comfortable.
- System age: Units 10–15 years old may be nearing the end of their efficient lifespan.
- Unusual noises or smells: Grinding, banging, or musty odors can be signs of serious issues.
If you’ve noticed one or more of these signs, it might be the right time to plan for a replacement. We can assess your system and recommend the best path forward for your comfort and budget.

A complete AC replacement typically runs $12,000 to $38,000 depending on the size of your system, efficiency rating, brand, and any ductwork or electrical updates needed. Koala publishes every price online — see our AC Cost & Pricing Guide for system-by-system pricing before we ever step on your porch. Landlord prices ($7,368 to $9,999) are available, too.
Sizing isn't just about your home's square footage. We perform a Manual J load calculation that factors in insulation, window count and orientation, ceiling height, ductwork, and Central Texas's specific climate load. An oversized unit short-cycles and wastes money; an undersized one runs nonstop and never catches up. Right-sizing is the single biggest factor in long-term comfort and energy bills. A good start for you is to know what size you currently have--it is usually accurate, or one size bigger or one size smaller.
Most standard AC replacements are completed in a single day — typically 6 to 8 hours from arrival to cleanup. Larger jobs that involve ductwork modifications, electrical upgrades, or full system swaps (AC plus furnace) can take 2 to 3 days. We give you a firm timeline in writing before work starts.
If both are 12+ years old, yes — almost always. Modern AC systems are tuned to work with matching furnace blowers, and replacing them as a pair gives you the efficiency rating you're paying for. If your furnace is significantly newer than your AC, replacing the AC alone is fine. We'll tell you straight up which scenario you're in.
SEER2 (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio) measures how much cooling you get per unit of electricity. The current minimum in Texas is SEER2 14.3. Higher-SEER systems (16, 18, 20+) cost more upfront but use less power — meaningful in Central Texas where AC runs 6+ months a year. For most homes, SEER 16 hits the sweet spot of payback. We'll model the actual energy savings for your home before you decide.
Yes. We partner with several lenders to offer financing on full system replacements, with approvals typically returned in just a few minutes — many homeowners qualify for low or 0% intro APR plans. See our Financing page for current options.
Sometimes. Unfortunately, the federal Inflation Reduction Act tax credit of up to $2,000 for qualifying high-efficiency heat pumps expired December 31st, 2025. Austin Energy plus several Central Texas utilities offer their own rebates for high-SEER systems. We'll identify every rebate and credit you qualify for and help you with the paperwork at no extra charge.
