Benefits of a Heat Pump

Using advanced energy transfer technology, today’s heat pumps provide both heating and cooling while reducing energy use and lowering utility costs.

Here’s what you can expect with a new Heat Pump.

  • Improves energy efficiency – Transfers heat instead of generating it, reducing energy use and lowering monthly utility costs.
  • Consistent comfort – Maintains even temperatures throughout your home, eliminating hot and cold spots for year-round comfort.
  • Saves you money – Delivers efficient heating and cooling that lowers monthly energy bills.

With a professionally installed heat pump from Koala Cooling & Plumbing, you can count on years of dependable performance, efficient comfort, and reliable heating and cooling for your entire home.

When to Consider a Heat Pump

If your home doesn’t have a heat pump yet, now’s the perfect time to experience the difference. Installing a new system can improve your comfort, lower your energy costs, and deliver efficient heating and cooling year-round.

Common signs you might want or need a heat pump upgrade:

  • High energy bills – Your current heating or cooling system is running constantly or costing more each season.
  • Uneven temperatures – Some rooms feel too hot or too cold, even when your system is running.
  • Frequent repairs – Your HVAC system is over 10 years old or starting to need constant service to stay running.
  • Noisy or outdated equipment – Older systems can be loud and inefficient compared to modern, inverter-driven heat pumps.
  • Environmental concerns – You want to reduce your carbon footprint and use cleaner, more sustainable technology.

If you’ve noticed one or more of these signs, it might be time to consider installing or upgrading to a new heat pump system. Our team can assess your home’s needs and recommend the best system for your comfort, efficiency, and budget.

What is a heat pump and how does it work?

A heat pump is a single system that both heats and cools your home — replacing the need for a separate furnace and AC. In summer it works like a traditional AC, pulling heat out of your home. In winter it reverses, pulling heat from the outside air (yes, even cold air contains heat energy) and bringing it inside. Because it's moving heat instead of generating it, a heat pump uses 50–60% less electricity than electric resistance heating or older HVAC systems.

Are heat pumps a good choice for Central Texas?

Yes — Central Texas is one of the best climates in the country for heat pumps. Our mild winters mean a heat pump can handle nearly all of your heating needs without auxiliary backup, and our long cooling season is where heat pumps already shine. Most Austin and Round Rock homeowners who switch see meaningful drops in their energy bills year-round.

How much does a heat pump cost in Austin and Round Rock?

Heat pump installation typically runs $12,000 to $38,000 depending on size, efficiency (SEER2/HSPF2 rating), brand, and whether ductwork modifications are needed. Local utility rebates can reduce your out-of-pocket cost by $800–$3,000 depending on your utility provider and which programs you qualify for. See our pricing guide for system-by-system pricing before any rebates are applied.

What's the difference between a heat pump and a traditional AC plus furnace?

A traditional system has two separate units — an AC for cooling and a furnace (usually gas) for heating. A heat pump does both jobs in one electric system. Benefits: lower operating cost in mild climates like ours, no gas combustion or carbon monoxide risk, and easier maintenance with only one outdoor unit. The main tradeoff is that in extremely cold climates a heat pump alone struggles below freezing — but in Central Texas, that's rarely an issue because we install heat-strip back-up.

Are there tax credits or rebates available for heat pumps?

The federal Section 25C tax credit for air-source heat pumps expired on December 31, 2025, and is not available for 2026 installations. However, local utility rebates remain active and meaningful. Austin Energy offers rebates averaging $800 for qualifying high-efficiency air conditioners and heat pumps, with larger rebates available through their Home Energy Savings whole-home program. Round Rock and surrounding areas have their own utility programs. We identify every rebate you qualify for based on your specific address and utility provider, and handle the rebate paperwork at no extra charge.

How long does a heat pump last?

A well-maintained heat pump typically lasts 12 to 15 years in Central Texas — comparable to a traditional AC. Because the same outdoor unit runs year-round (versus an AC that gets a winter break), regular maintenance is important. Koala Club members get annual tune-ups that materially extend system life.

What heat pump brands do you install?

We install every major heat pump brand including Carrier, Lennox, Trane, Bosch, Mitsubishi, and Daikin. We're an authorized dealer for Carrier and Lennox, which gives you factory-trained installation and the strongest available warranties. The "best" brand depends on your home, budget, and efficiency goals — we'll lay out three real options with honest tradeoffs before you decide.

Do you offer financing for heat pump installation?

Yes. We partner with several lenders for financing on heat pump installations, with approvals typically returned in just a few minutes. Many homeowners qualify for low-APR or 0% intro plans that make the monthly cost lower than what they're already paying in electric bill savings. See our Financing page for current options.
