A heat pump is a single system that both heats and cools your home — replacing the need for a separate furnace and AC. In summer it works like a traditional AC, pulling heat out of your home. In winter it reverses, pulling heat from the outside air (yes, even cold air contains heat energy) and bringing it inside. Because it's moving heat instead of generating it, a heat pump uses 50–60% less electricity than electric resistance heating or older HVAC systems.

A traditional system has two separate units — an AC for cooling and a furnace (usually gas) for heating. A heat pump does both jobs in one electric system. Benefits: lower operating cost in mild climates like ours, no gas combustion or carbon monoxide risk, and easier maintenance with only one outdoor unit. The main tradeoff is that in extremely cold climates a heat pump alone struggles below freezing — but in Central Texas, that's rarely an issue because we install heat-strip back-up.

The federal Section 25C tax credit for air-source heat pumps expired on December 31, 2025, and is not available for 2026 installations. However, local utility rebates remain active and meaningful. Austin Energy offers rebates averaging $800 for qualifying high-efficiency air conditioners and heat pumps, with larger rebates available through their Home Energy Savings whole-home program. Round Rock and surrounding areas have their own utility programs. A well-maintained heat pump typically lasts 12 to 15 years in Central Texas — comparable to a traditional AC.
